Waging War Every Sunday: Claypool Expects “Jump” in Year Two

draft by Chase Claypool

As the Pittsburgh Steelers’ opening game against the Buffalo Bills continues to get closer, all eyes are on the Black and Gold as they gear up for a season filled with high hopes. After going three and one in preseason, head coach Mike Tomlin is confident in his team, stating that “they’re growing with each outing” and “will be ready on the twelfth.” Of course a stand out amongst this growing Steelers team is wide receiver Chase Claypool who's expected to have another impressive season.

As Claypool gears up for his second season in the NFL, his standout rookie year, in which the six-foot-four offensive weapon recorded an impressive nine touchdowns (eighth highest amongst wide receivers), is still fresh in the minds of fans and analysts alike. Comparisons to Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf have already been made as one reporter remembers Metcalf’s impressive rookie year being followed by an even more explosive second year in the NFL. When asked if he could see a similar trajectory in his game, Claypool answered “just like my college years, I always progressed. Things got easier for me in college and things are getting easier for me in the NFL. I definitely think I’m going to jump.”

This projected jump would certainly bring an already talented Pittsburgh offense to the next level and play a big role in accomplishing the goals both Claypool and his team have set out for themselves. Asked about his expectations for the season, Claypool answered that the team is of course looking to “make a good playoff run and try to win the Super Bowl.” As for the expectations the wide receiver has for himself , “do better than I did last year” was his answer. Coming off of a hot rookie year, a better showing in year two would further cement Claypool as a top wide receiver in the NFL. The key to this jump? “Confidence,” says Claypool.

The Steelers will face off against the Bills in Buffalo on Sunday, September 12 at 1:00 PM.
